Obstetrics & Gynecology Overview

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga offers a comprehensive 4-year program with 4 positions offered at each level. Our program and institution have a major affiliation with Erlanger Health System -- the region’s only level 1 trauma center, perinatal center, and tertiary neonatal intensive care unit.  Erlanger includes Children's Hospital at Erlanger and is the 6th largest public health system in the U.S.Both the Obstetrics and Gynecology services are extremely active, with approximately 3500 deliveries and more than 5000 gynecologic procedures each year.

Currently, 14 full-time academic faculty members work with residents daily, along with an additional 20 active volunteer faculty who supervise residents across both obstetrics and gynecology curriculums.  Academic faculty members represent the areas of general obstetrics/gynecology, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, gynecologic oncology, maternal fetal medicine, urogynecology, and minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. All faculty practice primarily within the Erlanger Health System, such that 24 hour in-house faculty supervision of residents is established.

Residents are actively involved with faculty in clinical research as well as patient safety and quality improvement projects. Research is further supported by a research coordinator supported by the College of Medicine.  Study design and statistical assistance is available through scheduled appointments through the institution's Director of Research.  Our residents have several articles in publication and have presented at national and international conferences.
