After serving two years with the United States Air Force at the Eglin AFB Regional Hospital, Dr. Worthington joined the faculty of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, Memphis. There he was a strong supporter of medical students and residents, serving as Program Director, Vice Chair for Academic Affairs, and acting Chair. He also served as the Chief of Family Practice at Baptist Memorial Hospital.


Dr. Worthington moved to Chattanooga in 1995 to start the Department of Family Medicine and the associated Family Medicine Residency Program. In addition to being past president of both the Tennessee Academy of Family Physicians and Tennessee Medical Association Dr. Worthington has held national postiions with the American Academcy of Family Physicians, the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, and the American Medical Association.


Prior to medical school, Dr. Worthington worked on his family farm, taught college level mathematics, and pursued a career in aeronautical engineering. A former pilot himself, he also loves to play the trombone, which he does regualarly for his church ensemble. Dr. Gary Malakoff graduated magna cum laude with a BS degree in Chemistry from Tufts University.  In 1982 he graduated with honors George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC .  Dr. Malakoff completed his residency and chief residency in Internal Medicine at George Washington.  In 1989, Dr. Malakoff was promoted to be the Director of General Internal Medicine, a post he held until 2005.  He has won many medical school teaching awards and several university faculty teaching awards.  He has also worked closely with the National Board of Medical Examiners developing new testing methods for medical students and has authored many journal articles reflecting his interest and expertise in medical education.


In March, 2009, Dr. Malakoff joined the full-time core faculty as an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the UT College of Medicine Chattanooga.  He is also Director of the Division of General Internal Medicine.

Dr. Sirelkhatim was named Neurology Clerkship Director in 2010 and also serves as the Neurology Education Coordinator for the Internal Medicine Residency.  His faculty rank is Assistant Professor in the Division of Neurology.  He is part of the UT Erlanger Neurology Group housed at the Erlanger Medical Mall and serves as Associate Director for the Erlanger Stroke Center.  The practice is also home to Southeast Tennessee's first and only accredited Primary Stroke Center. Erlanger earned the Gold Seal of Approval from The Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers, recognizing that the Erlanger stroke care program follows national standards and guidelines that can significantly improve outcomes for stroke patients.  


Dr. Sirelkhatim received his Medical Degree from the University of Khartoum in the Sudan.  He completed a residency in Neurology at the Medical College of Georgia.  Dr. Sirelkhatim is Board Certified in Neurology and Vascular Neurology. He is active member of American academy of neurology, Movement Disorder society and American Heart Association.

Dr. Jeanie Dassow graduated with highest distinction from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine in 1987 and then completed a residency in OB/GYN at Barnes Hospital/Washington University in St. Louis in 1991. She was later faculty at the University
of Kentucky where she won several teaching awards in both Family Medicine and OB/GYN.  Dr. Dassow joined the UT College of
Medicine Chattanooga faculty in the late Fall 2010 and was appointed Clerkship Director for UT Chattanooga Department of OB/GYN in January 2011. Her academic interests are providing care
in areas of health disparities, preventive medicine, global health,
and medical education.  She and her physician husband have six children.


Dr. Dassow is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Administrative Contact:

Dr. Stevens is Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga. She is primarily from Memphis. A member of the UT faculty since 1991, she received her M.D. from the UT Health Science Center in Memphis. She completed a residency in Pediatrics at UT/LeBonheur Children's Medical Center and a Clinical Genetics Fellowship at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City.


Dr. Stevens is Board Certified in Pediatrics and Medical Genetics and previously held faculty appointments at the University of Utah and The Medical College of Virginia.

Terry Holmes, MD, MPH & TM (Psychiatry)
Psychiatry Clerkship Director and
Medical Director for the Mocassin Bend Mental Health Institute


Dr. Terry Holmes was named Psychiatry Clerkship Director in 2010 and has supervised an inpatient psychiatry medical student elective for the past five years.  He has numerous years experience in practicing psychiatry as well as administration, and is also the Medical Director for the Mocassin Bend Mental Health Institute in Chattanooga.  He is boarded certified in Psychiatry.

Administrative Contact:


Dr. Daniel Stanley completed medical school training at Indiana University School of Medicine.  He completed a Surgery Residency at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines and subsequently completed Colorectal Fellowship in Royal Oak Michigan at William Beaumont Hospital before returning to Chattanooga and joining the faculty at UTCOMC in 1999.
